Service-Learning - Learning, Service, and Civic Engagement

Welcome

Welcome to Service-Learning: Learning, Service, and Civic Engagement. This self-paced tutorial is presented by the Center for Teaching and Learning and is designed for Minnesota State College and University faculty members interested in service-learning. Some of the common questions about service-learning include, "How can I possibly fit service-learning into my curriculum, and is it even really worth it?" This tutorial addresses these and other questions and provides resources and ideas for starting your own service-learning projects.

Service-learning is one method of getting students to engage and interact with each other and with the content of a course. If you decide that service-learning is not a fit for your learning objectives, there are a number of other methods of adding active learning to your courses. The Center for Teaching and Learning offers other tutorials that explore other methods of promoting active learning that you may want to explore.

The Active Teaching tutorial explores reasons and methods for breaking from traditional lecture-based instructional styles.  Active Learning in an Online Environment and Active Learning in Diverse Classrooms both provide more specialized information about active learning.  Effective ESL/Peer Student Tutoring encourages and describes how to foster teaching/tutoring amongst student peers.
